Matthews and MSNBC are a Joke

Last night the Republican candidates for President gathered at the Ronald Reagan Library for what turned out to be a circus-like debate. But frankly, folks, with MSNBC running (I should say “ruining”) this show, what did we all expect?

I don’t know who put Chris Matthews in charge of this debate, but good God! The man has an O’Reilly complex that just comes off completely wrong. Who interrupts candidates during a Presidential Debate? Did someone give the memo to Matthews that people tuned in to see the candidates and NOT him?!? Ugh – listening to that loud mouth yammer away when he should have had his mouth shut was just horrible.

And when the hell do internet questions get any place in a Presidential debate? First of all, the internet is decidedly left. That’s obvious, there’s no contention about that and no one really cares since the internet is the ultimate in freedom of expression. But to ask questions submitted by readers of a website? I mean who plans this garbage?

For what it’s worth, I thought that Mitt Romney did well last night while McCain did a good job. Rudy’s answers seemed kinda weak for me, but I still think he’s going to take the general election primaries with flying colors (and I also think that he’ll be our next President).

But if I have to watch Presidential Debates on MSNBC only (since the liberal Democrats refuse to go on FOX News), then it’s going to be a boring election season since there’s NO WAY I can sit through another Matthews-moderated debate. Someone – please! – fire this guy already! He has no talent and is a horrible on-air personality!

The “May Day” Rallies Will Never Work

This past Monday the immigrant community held their newly annual “May Day” protest march in favor of immigration. Not only is this march a gigantic waste of time, but it will never work. Why, you ask? Well, let me explain.

The biggest reason is that the majority of Americans (both Republicans and Democrats) are completely turned off by these rallies when they look at the footage and see tons of Mexican flags being waved in place of American flags. Sure, you see American flags and in some rallies you see American flags all over the place – but when you have mass gatherings of foreign born folks gathering in American streets waving any flag other than the American one, you will turn the massive majority of Americans off. And as opposed to what some extremists might try to say, that’s the God’s Honest truth.

Further, the majority of these rallies are polluted by completely ridiculous anti-traditionalist and anti-Republican slogans. There has been no American President in recent history that is more pro-immigration (and pro-amnesty) than George W. Bush. Yet there are extremists sprinkled among the good-hearted immigrant population who are waving “No War on Iraq, No War on Immigrants” banners. Huh? What the fuck does that mean? Does NO ONE listen to the completely pro-immigration policy that the President puts forward? And how the hell does Iraq factor into any of this?!?

However, the problem that will continue to derail the protesters’ each and every year is the core message that they are advocating for with the rallies. You see, when one common American is sitting in a room with friends or family watching these rallies, it’s rare that they actually hear what the news commentators say. Why is this? Because inevitably one of the people in the room says, “What’s this all about?” And they get their answer from someone else in the room, which pretty much rips apart the rallies. And that answer is the no bullshit truth…

That these rallies are being held so that the millions of illegal immigrants that are already in American are given a blanket amnesty to stay – yet earn – their citizenship. And quite frankly, that’s breaking the law. If you are here illegally, you broke the law. Leave and come back legally and American will welcome you. The common American hears this and says, “What? I can’t break the law – why can they?” Boom! Immediately there is zero support for these protesters.

And as if their core purpose for protesting wasn’t enough, these protesters claim that we are a nation of immigrants. Well, not only does the common American not like it when the laws of his land are broken by a group of defiant protesters, he HATES it when you tell him that he’s not American. And this is something that needs to be spoken in the public dialogue more. We are NOT a nation of immigrants. We are a nation FOUNDED by immigrants. I was born in America, as were my brothers, my cousins, my parents, and one set of my grandparents. I have college friends who can trace their lineage back to the Mayflower. Are THEY immigrants? Absolutely not!

So the May Day rallies will never work because of the common, apolitical American that does not like it when his country’s laws are broken just as much as he doesn’t like being told that he’s not an American. The pro-illegal immigration groups need to find a new way to push their cause…because rallies bring about the truth and the truth is that they are not pushing a popular agenda.

Iraq Bill Vetoed…Now Fund the War, Today!

As a student of American history and specifically public policy (the actions of a government to address the needs of its people), I can appreciate the Democratic attempt to insert a timetable for withdrawal in the Iraq war spending bill. In fact, I completely agree with those among the Democrats who say that passing this bill was what they were sent to Congress to do. They’ve done their jobs and served their country valiantly in a very tough situation.

But now that the message is sent and the bill has been vetoed, it’s time to pass a new bill without a timetable that funds this war as soon as possible. Speaker Pelosi’s Congress has sent a strong and clear message to the American people and the President of the United States. Yet, as President Bush said today: “They’ve sent their message, and now it’s time to put politics behind us and support our troops with the funds.”

The clear and present truth of this situation is that even after passing a second bill without a timetable, the Democrats have won this political battle. And remember, I’m a guy who is so traditional in his politics and views that I think the Republicans are too liberal at times! So I’m certainly not a guy who goes around congratulating Democrats!

But as any student of public policy who also studies ethics and morality will tell you, now that the message has been sent to President Bush, this Congress has an obligation to fund the Iraq spending bill. Of course, they shouldn’t load it with military pork (or generic pork for that matter), but now that they’ve won the battle they can help their cause to win the greater war for the American political system by funding this war today.

Score a point for the Democrats with this one, but I suspect the Republicans will come on very strong once Rudy Giuliani starts to really hit that campaign trail and rallying support.

Student Loan Payment Update

Since I feel the need to update you folks on my student loan payments, today I made a sizable payment on one of my loans. So the smallest of my loans – the $6000 Citibank Loan – will hopefully be paid in full by mid-June.

Getting this loan, which has the highest interest rate, paid off will be a nice improvement on my student loan situation.

I expect to have a few more big payments towards my student loans in the coming months – like I said a few months ago, I will be taking a very proactive stance against these stupid student loans this year in hopes of paying them down as much as possible.

How Does Gas Cost So Much?

Here we go again. The oil companies have convinced the media and the American public that as summer comes closer, gas prices have to rise. Believe me, I “get” that more people travel in the summer time and that this necessitates a rise in gas prices. That’s obvious.

What I don’t get is how, in the middle of April and now in the beginning of May, prices can be skyrocketing. No families are doing summer traveling yet because the kids are still in school for another two months. College kids aren’t on the roads heading home yet because most places still have 2 weeks of finals and graduation ceremonies yet to come. And the average American worker doesn’t go on vacation until the middle or the end of the summer.

There are no burning oil fields anywhere and no supply chain disruptions anywhere in the world. In fact, we are coming off one of the mildest winters in history where we actually bad a build-up of oil reserves!

So where the fuck do these oil companies get off charging more for gas at the pump? Don’t give me some bullshit about wholesale gas prices rising – that’s a bunch of bullshit. It costs some $3 (THREE DOLLARS) to extract oil from the ground and to refine it so that it can be used in automobiles. Three dollars!

I don’t know about you, but if I see this quarter bringing in another set of record profits for these scumbag bastards, I’m seriously going to look into some type of hybrid vehicle. This is getting ridiculous.
