A lot has been in the news lately about President Bush’s recent commutation of “Scooter” Libby’s sentence. It seems like the general consensus out there is that Bush was wrong to do this because it proves that there is cronyism and no equal justice in Washington, DC. I take a different look at it.
First of all, there IS cronyism and no equal justice in Washington DC! Both Democrats and Republicans are guilty of disgusting, immoral bastardizations of the trust that we repose in them to lead our country (anyone remember when a certain Louisiana Congressman’s freezer was stacked with rolls of money?). Our system is broken. On this fourth of July, it is time that everyone in this country really take a good, hard look at our founding documents – all we need to govern ourselves properly is in there. But I digress…
I’m not angry about Bush’s commutation – it’s his power and right as President to enact that provision if he feels it necessary. What I am REALLY angry about is that this Libby guy committed no crime and was essentially found guilty of someone ELSE’s crime! Anyone who looks at this case with any grain of fairness knows that Richard Armitage is the one who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to the Robert Novak, not Libby.
What irks me the most is that Armitage walks free. Now, if the RIGHT guy was convicted of the crime and sentenced to two and a half years in jail and this sentence was commuted by Bush, then I would be irate at the President. But for a guy who simply knew something and repeated what he heard about what was already out there (i.e. committing no crime), two and a half years is too harsh.
Armitage, though, that’s another story. Bring charges against him and throw the book at him!
