With my lease expiring at the end of May, I am beginning to pack up my stuff. This is an interesting process because, as anyone who has undergone a major move or two can tell you, this is the time to purge all of your unnecessary crap. This is especially true in my case as a lot of the stuff that I’m moving is paperwork and “things” that have accumulated over the course of the last eight years since I started college.
There are packages of “things” underneath my bed that are just completely unnecessary. I have a box somewhere with Garfield postcards that I bought in grade school and have rarely used (I think I used two of them since buying them). Now if that’s not a waste, then I don’t know what is! Come to think of it, I might send one to my Grandmother…she likes those postcards.
I also have instruction manuals for items that I no longer own. How ridiculous is that? Throwing out stuff like this is going to be fun, though lugging the garbage bags down to the dumpster will be a bitch. Over the last few weeks I’ve just about cleaned out my kitchen. You wouldn’t believe the amount of expired food that we had in the cupboards! It was ridiculous. At least two huge garbage bags filled with expired stuff had to go.
And then there are my clothes. Now, with my rollercoaster weight I definitely won’t be getting rid of any of the clothing. However, stuff that is WAY too big to wear and stuff that is now way too small to wear all just needs to be boxed up and stored away.
Which brings me to storage. As I may have said somewhere earlier on the blog, I’m getting all of my stuff put into storage while I camp out at my parents’ house and continue my house hunt. The last thing I want this storage area to turn into is a bastion of old and unneeded crap…especially when I’m paying something like $50+ per month for the unit! Can you believe that a 2 – 3 bedroom sized storage unit costs somewhere around $120+ per month? That’s ridiculous. Thankfully, I’m sharing the cost with some of the guys that I advise who also need storage space.
So as I begin to pack away my worldly possessions and store them in some unit in Neptune, New Jersey, I guess this also begins Spring Cleaning. Exciting…not really.
